Top 23 Jim Carrey Movies: #23

If you’re new to Just Original Entertainment (like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, and subscribe on YouTube) then you’re probably unaware that I’m a massive Jim Carrey fan. The man is hilarious and a great role model. Most of his films have brought me countless hours of enjoyment…most of them…I have to admit he has had a couple stinkers but hey, you can’t win em all. Speaking of stinkers, lets talk about The Number 23 which coincidentally is number 23 on my Top 23 Jim Carrey Movies list.

Writting on the wall

The Number 23 is a phycological thriller that came out in 2007 and this movie, much like the rest of 2007, left audiences scratching their heads wondering “what the f*** was that all about?” Unlike most of Jim Carrey’s body of work this one’s lacking in the physical comedy department which is the primary reason for its low ranking.

If you don’t know what this is about let me tell you. Walter Sparrow (Carrey) reads a book about The Number 23 by Topsy Kretts, the more he reads the more the Number 23 infiltrates his life. Is he crazy? Is it all in his head? Or is the Number 23 actually following him?

Interesting premise but it’s sadly lacking. If you try hard enough you can find 23 in anything. “Where there’s a will, there’s a way.” Check this out: J-O-E has three letters, M-A-R-T-I-N has six letters (a three-letter difference), and G-R-E-E-N-B-E-R-G has nine letters (another three-letter difference) …that’s two three letter differences or 23…I’m reaching there but that’s exactly my point.

I wish I could enjoy this movie more, I really do, I admire Jim for switching it up and doing something that isn’t comedy. Fact is, you can only polish so many turds. What I mean is just think about how lame the majority of Jim’s movies would’ve been had it been a different actor in the leading role. The movie doesn’t make the actor, in Jim Carrey’s case, the actor makes the movie.

Likewise, just imagine how many movies could’ve been better had Jim starred in them. Movies Jim had been attached to at one time or another include: Elf, Austin Powers, The Wedding Singer, Meet the Parents, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Pirates of the Caribbean, Toy Story, and Scooby Doo.

Reading a book

Love it or hate it, Jim Carrey’s 23rd best movie is better than most actors best movie. At the end of the day, trying to find hidden meanings in things that don’t matter is a waste of time, it only matters because you’re making it matter. Just pretend 23 isn’t following you, go on, do it, “go ahead, tell yourself it’s just a number.”
